“I decided that the sky is the limit and I would not let my talents go to waste.”
Do you want that old R&B back? Are you tired of R&B artists crossing over into more mainstream genres. We are too! It seems like the good old days of R&B are being turned into dance or a pop version of the genre. The substance is gone and most importantly, the emotion isn’t there. Newcomer Urban Holloway is putting a spark back into R&B/soul with his latest album, Open Diary.
Growing up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Urban grew up listening to the greats like Al Green, Michael Jackson, and Gerald Levert. At the tender age of 14, the singer discovered his passion for music and ultimately knew this was what he wanted to do. With his ambition, charisma, and of course talent, Urban Holloway is on the right track to the finish line.
I caught up with Urban Holloway to talk about his new release, Open Diary, his musical journey, and some highlights in his career.

Talk about your musical journey from wanting to start a career in music, getting your first break, to releasing new music.
I actually started pursuing a career this year. I was always fascinated with photography that I wasn’t confident that I could pursue both dreams. I was constantly encouraged by my family and the people around me that I decided that the sky is the limit and I would not let my talents go to waste.
What’s your writing process like? Who or what inspires you?
I’m inspired by other R&B singers that started off as songwriters such as Frank Ocean and Ne-Yo. Their songs are always filled with powerful lyrics and emotion. When I write my lyrics I want that passion and emotion to be felt and connected with my listeners. I want to give them a piece of myself and my experiences.
Talk about the fondest moments you had so far in your music career. From the first live show, connecting with fans, getting songs played on radios, etc.
Being that my career just started, I am just being exposed to the various opportunities that have come my way. I sent my EP to various blogs, and websites, hopefully to get exposure, and I was extremely humbled and appreciative that I received positive comments and reviews about Open Diary. I also gained a few twitter fans that swooned over my EP. I make sure that I express personal gratitude to my listeners/fans and stay humble with whatever I do. I hope to get some live shows and radio plays soon! (Laughs).
Open Diary is like your “open diary,” pun intended! How much does it mean to you to have such a personal piece of work?
I feel excited about sharing my talents through song and especially putting my feelings into it. I wanted Open Diary I decided that the sky is the limit and I would not let my talents go to waste. to come naturally, from the heart because that’s where my inspirations come from best.
For those who have not listened to Open Diary (my favorite jams are “Tonight” and “Come In”), what can they expect from it?
This EP encompasses all my thoughts, and emotions from my experiences with relationships in my life, which makes it so personal, like I’m writing in a diary. I wanted to introduce myself to my listeners to build that personal connection through song. There are some emotionally soulful tracks, and also some feel good jams that you can dance to. Overall I worked hard balancing the emotion so my listeners were on their toes.
What’s next for you?
I have already started writing my next single for my next project. You can look for that real soon!
